Nicole: logo Designs

Logo 1
This is the first logo i have designed for our group project as an option we could chose from. What i like about this logo is that it looks professional but yet simple enough to be remembered. At current the colour scheme i have chosen is just an example of what we could go with if we decided to chose this logo.
Logo 2

This is the second logo design i have created for our group like the first logo i have tried to incorporate some film influence in its design represented bu the ticker-tape. I chose to keep the purple and black colours again to keep my designs constant however it can be easily altered if the group decided they would like something different.

Logo 3
This is the final logo design that i have created for out group. As before with the other logos i tried to incorporate a theme associated with the media/film industry, this lead me to the idea of a play button witch can be seen just lit up inside the circle. I like this logo for our company as it looks more professional than the other logo and as before once we have discussed this logo as a group alterations can be made to make it something we are all happy with.

Treatment

Synopsis

In the summer of 2012, a 16 year old girl named Ava is sitting in her room reading the invitation to an after prom party by her popular sister, Ella, who is also her only friend.

As Ava narrates her life to the viewers, flashbacks show her general life leading up to the prom. She's victimised by two girls who are jealous of her and pick on her because she doesn't wear designer clothes or the newest phones. Seth is the most popular boy in the school who Ava has liked for years, but he shows little interest in her, giving her a "hi" every now and then, but nevertheless the only one who sticks up for her. Chez is a chav and a background character who's interested in Ava, but she hardly ever notices him or the fact that he has a crush on her and hates Seth.

Back into the present, Ava's mother comes into her room and encourages her to attend. Ava's delighted to know it's Seth's party, but the two bullies will also be there. However, Ava eventually agrees, her mother helps her look pretty and get ready to go and drops her off at Seth's house.

Ella and Seth welcome Ava and make her feel at home. Ella admits that Seth likes her and soon after, Seth approaches her and they start talking. The bullies start taunting her behind her but she defends herself for the first time ever, which Seth admires. However, Chez sees them admit their feelings for each other and becomes angry of jealousy. As Ava and Seth declare their love for each other, t'old Chez hears them and goes to attack Seth. Ava notices Chez's advance and as they scuffle, Ava shoves Chez onto the floor. As he falls, a bloody knife drops form his hands. To everyone's horror, Ava looks down to see that it's her who's been stabbed. As she falls to the floor, Seth and Ella run to her aid and the screen fades to black.

Title of the film

We have finally decided to choose "The Last Shards" as this metaphorically represents Ava's life: her life has been made up of broken shards, nothing has ever gone right or ended happily. After she attends the party and falls in  love, she is pushed down the stairs; which is the last bad thing that will ever happen in her life, which will be the "Last Shards". Additionally, shards represent broken glass, which represents how fragile Ava is to the world; but when she's at the party, knowing something has gone right in her life for once, she gains some courage. This is also why her death is the "last" shards. It's not a typical title for a fairy tale-type film but the structure is still the same (begins with "the" and ends in a noun).

Length of the film

The length of our film will approximately be between 4 and 6 depending on the length/amount of flashbacks.

Target Audience

After studying our questionnaire, the majority of people who would pay to watch it and recommend it were people aged between 17 and 19. The only candidate who would have paid to watch it was a 19 year old female at university, therefore more romantic elements could be included to extend that female audience. The only candidate who wouldn't recommend it was a 40 year old policeman. The rest of the candidates were 17 year old male students who would recommend the film and watch it for free. All of whom, had watched a short film before. Therefore we conclude to target our short film at 15 to 30 year olds. This is probably because the story line can be empathised easier with younger viewers as it's the younger generation that provides the foundation of our film. This film is especially targeted at anyone from around the South/West Yorkshire areas as this is where our film is set, therefore there's a chance a South Yorkshire audience would be more biased to like this film. In addition, everyone interviewed in our questionnaire were from South Yorkshire.

Special Effects

What makes our film unique is the effect of flashbacks, which we've not seen yet within the short films we've watched.  We also have a ver unexpected ending. The idea was to make the audience think that either the bullies would ruin everything for Ava or she would kiss Seth and live happily ever after. But the fact that the main character dies (or does she?) at the end is meant to shock the audience as it's very unexpected.

Final Film Idea: Characters/Aspects

CHARACTERS
Obviously, if you're creating a fairy tale adaptation, you need symbolic characters in it.
The main characters in our film are:
The young girl (Heroine)
The young girl's Mother/Sister [not decided] (Fairy Godmother)
The two bullies (Ugly step-sisters)
The young girl's crush (Prince)
Background antagonist who comes to light at the end of the film (Buttons, but evil)

As you can see, we've stuck to the original story character wise, but made our own changes i the relations of the characters, which will help make our short film slightly more original. It's not meant to be obvious, but the audience wil, supposed to have the same attitude directed at these characters as they would if watching the original fairy tale.
For example: The two bullies - these would be our "ugly stepsisters" characters. Of course, they're not our main character's siblings, but they have the same characteristics of jealousy and victimisation. The mother or sister - though we haven't decided if the fairy godmother character will be a mother or sister, it is the same idea that the young girl, through all her mishaps has some form of guidance. The difference is the mother/sister doesn't guide or cause change through magic, but by wisdom and encouragement. Not only does this make it, again, more original, but will relate to the audience more as it's more realistic.
Aspects In old fairy tales, the stories consist of not only good verses evil, but rich versus poor, as these fairy tales were written at a time where there were no classes.
To be at least financially stable, you had to be either royalty or nobility. If you weren't either of those, you were a peasant. Fairy tales show how poor people can achieve happy, successful lives and were most probably written at that time to reassure the people and in doing so, selling lots of books. - In modern time, there's obviously no aristocrats anymore. But what seems to have replaced the barrier of rich and poor is spoilt children and grateful children. Children are often bullied because they lack the latest phone or designer clothing. I our story, the young girl could be picked on because she doesn't have designer clothes or other materialistic possessions; just like in the Cinderella story where the step sisters do the same. However, what makes them worse is the fact that neither Cinderella or our character needs "stuff" because they are beautiful inside and out. As this story still relates to the old fairy tale, it still possesses slight originality which is what we're looking for. Another aspect is the venue in which the climax of Cinderella is held. It was, of course, a ball which in the time Cinderella was set was a very common social event. - In the 21st century, common social events include the prom, house parties or family gatherings. We were torn between a prom (which would be more similar to a ball, therefore ideal) or a house party, but we don't have much authority, equipment or people so a house party is all we can manage and will do. It's still a common social event. Lastly, the moral of the Cinderella story is that someone who's suffered at the hands of unjust has been triumphantly rewarded. - In our story, we are going to follow the film Carrie for the ending. Carrie is a Stephen King horror loosely based on the Cinderella story; however, at her prom, it doesn't end happily. She's covered in pigs blood. So we're going to have a bad ending as well, but one that the audience won't suspect. When our character goes to the party, the audience will know the "prince" character will be there and the bullies will also be there. But the bad ending has nothing to do with these characters. This will create shock and suspense among the audience and creates originality for us.

Proposal

In short our film will be based on a modern adaptation of a fairy tale featuring all the key elements that you would normally expect from this type on genre. Form the princess in distress; to the evil enemy we plan to include it all but in modern refreshing way.  The key character in our film will be a young girl around the age of 15-17 who has had a rough start in life. Things such as being bullied or feeling lonely are all aspects we want to include as part of her roll.  One day this character will receive an invitation to a social event  (not yet decided) that she hopes will change her life. Our film will follow the character as she prepares to get ready to attend the event and all the preparations she needs to pick up the courage while flashing back to the events that have lead up to this day. The film will continue from here as the girl attends the event  and events unfold that lead to a dramatic end.

Short Film: I Am Butterfly

This is a short film about 6  minutes long called I Am Butterfly about a girl who's being interviewed by police to find her mum.

Short Film Analysis

Short Film Analysis
I Am Butterfly

This 6 minute film is about a girl telling police that her mother has gone missing. As they ask her questions about her disappearance it is slowly revealed that she was abandoned and ran off with her boyfriend to become a model to make money. It is a narrative film and the video purely consists of a day out with the girl and her mother and metaphorically shows what happened.

Cinematography
The story opens with an extreme close-up on the little girl’s face, most likely to show she is the main protagonist of the film. The camera is mainly kept at a medium close up at the girl and her mother to show the bond they have together and their facial expressions, which are happy at the beginning and develop as the girl tells the story. As the mother’s boyfriend is introduced, he is shot at a low angle shot to illustrate his power over the mother and daughter. Just after the shot of the boyfriend, the camera zooms in on the mother’s bag at an eye line shot form the boyfriend, as if to show that the boyfriend is only interested in the mother’s money.  Through out the film, the mother and daughter have been filmed at the same level and at an eye line match. At the end of the film, the mother is shot more from a low angle shot and the daughter is portrayed lower than her. This shows the power the mother has which accentuates the helplessness and weakness of the daughter. This could also be to show that even though the mother walks away from her daughter, she still has the power to stay with her, but chooses not to. As she greets her boyfriend, the camera zooms into a close-up of their hands joining as they walk away into an establishing shot. The girl is finally shot alone in a medium long shot at a slightly high angle to show her weakness and helplessness, making the audience feel more sympathy and emotion towards her. The fact she is shot alone also creates emotion as children that young aren’t meant to be on their own.

Mis en sen
The mother and daughter are well dressed and healthy looking; however the mother seems more expensively dressed and covered in jewellery which could foreshadow that the mother at some point thinks slightly more about herself than her daughter (it also shows they’re not struggling financially). This is to fool the audience into thinking the film has a happy, positive storyline so the audience are shocked when they realise what the film is about. The boyfriend is dressed in black and has black sunglasses on. This is to portray him as a bad, even evil character and that he will be the antagonist in the story. The mother is dressed in a posh, red dress. Red is commonly known as a daring colour, not innocent, so it’s no surprise when it’s revealed at the end that she’ s abandoned her daughter to become a model. Additionally, when the camera zooms onto her bag, we can see her bag is modern and gold. This shows the mother could be very materialistic and accentuates the idea that she wants to become a model. At the very end, the mother and daughter are playing in a glass, hollow design feature within the retail park. While the daughter’s telling the police the part about her mother leaving her, the daughter is behind one sheet of glass with her mother on the other side, their palms on the glass “touching” each other. Her mother suddenly walks away and the daughter is left behind the glass banging and shouting after her. This is to show how the daughter is trapped and helpless and that the mother is free to do what she wants but chooses to leave her daughter anyway. In addition, the fact that they look well looked after shows that her mother wasn’t desperate for money; she just wanted what she’d call a better life.

Music
The film opens up with the song “I Am Butterfly” which is a calm, sentimental song in a major key which means it’s a happy song and is played while the mother and daughter are laughing and playing together.  The music continues in a major key as the daughter is telling the police positive things about her mother. As she starts talking about bad things that happened between them, the key changed to a minor key; this is a sad tone and creates an ambiance of negativity.  Next, the daughter starts talking about her mother’s boyfriend and the music changes again into a dissonance tone. This tone of music is harsh and is usually used to signal a dangerous or evil presence, which reflects the nature of the boyfriend. The change in minor key to dissonance key builds tension, and the tension hits the audience when the girl stops talking and the music simultaneously stops. The daughter continues to talk and starts talking about her mother leaving her. As she’s doing so, the music slowly increases in tempo and volume in a minor key to build emotion and, yet again, tension to pull on the audience’s heartstrings.

Editing
There isn’t much editing within the film, as is the same in most short films. However the only editing i noticed was the slow motion when the daughter was behind the glass trying to touch her mother’s palm. The camera also zoomed in at this point and the film was slowed down. This was to show the audience closely the bond between the mother and daughter. Even though the mother leaves her, she’s clearly not happy about her decision as she cares much for her daughter. The fact this shot is emphasised with slow motion effects and an extreme close up shot proves this to the audience.

Media: Analyse a short film.

This short film is about a man that is seen as a monster because of how vile and irritating he is to other members of staff in the work place.

Firstly we see a close up shot of the main character, then the close up shot cuts into a medium close up shot which shows ‘the monster’ in the foreground. This shot is effective because it shows the setting and introduces the characters. Throughout the film we see extreme close up shots of the main character to show the audience his anger and frustration towards the monster.

The lighting is good in all areas of the film as it is dim and well coloured for the setting of the workplace. Sometimes we can see that the monster has a half shaded face which implies that he has a dark or mysterious side, and in this case he does.

The sound in the film is decent throughout and it is really good when there is a mixture of dialogue all scrambled together when the monster is talking to represent how the main character is taking in what he is saying which is a really effective technique. Also there is non-diegetic high key music which increases the tension when the monster turns evil.

The story is linear and flows in time. The editing used is to a great standard and each scene is cut precisely.

The blood effect is good when he kills the monster, because it squirts onto his shirt and we can actually see this taking place.

The props in the film are good for instance the computers and stapler and general surroundings set the scene as a typical workplace. Also the acting in the film is pretty good as all the characters are clear and are therefore easy to understand.

Overall the film is good and is entertaining towards the end, I like how relatable it is (excluding the final scene) and the cinematography and sound is very good and I would like to use a similar approach to our own film.

short film research 3

this video is of a short film called trains & paper planes that was entered in the virgin media shorts competition 2012. What i like about this film is its simple story line that is easy to follow and understand  what is going on despite the fact that there is no dialog. From the beginning of the film you can clearly see a connection between the films title and subject matter as the location of the filming and props used both feature in the title. In this film a wide variety of shots and camera angels are used  to create a professional and well presented effect. One of the particular shots i like is the opening scene that helps establish both the location and one of the key characters straight away, Another thing i like about this scene is you will notice as the male character walks across the screen the films title appears to be behind him and remains there until he sits down, this is unlike conventional films as credits usually appear over the top of the action not part of it.  One thing i would say is that the plot line is not very original as you may notice similarity's between this short film and a tv advert featured in 2011

Production company logo research

As part of our project we had to design a production companies logo, all of the screenshots below are examples of existing logos for original companies that i have researched  for inspiration along with comments about what i like and dislike about the logos.

Three leaves

The first logo i have looked at is for a company called three leaves productions. What i like about this logo is its simplicity and use of pictures to tie the name and graphics together. This would be a good technique to use for our logo, however due to the fact of what we have called our company this maybe a little hard. Another thing i like about this logo is its use of colour this helps make the logo stand out and become more memorable.

Legendary pictures
Like the three leaves logo this company has used its name to inspire the pictures on this logo using the celtic style pattern to portray an old appearance associated with stories and legends. Because this is an older company the logo appears to be more dated than other logos i have looked at. For our company i dont think it would be suitable to go for such a historical looking logo as it directly contradicts the companies name as the word progression basically means ' moving toward the future' not the past.

Miramax

unlike previous logos i have looked at this one features no images what so ever in its design and although it helps make the logo memorable as it features little visual requirement i do find that is also boring to look. One feature that i would pick out from this logo is its use of two type faces in its design, something which we could look at doing when we produce ours as a group.

Revolution Pictures
Like our company revolution pictures features a name that is hard to associate with a image therefor i think this is a good example of a logo to look at. What this company has chosen to do instead is create a logo that is memorable and unique by its use of fonts and colours. To me this seems as if it would the best direction for our group to go in as it is the most appropriate.

Bison
i chose to include this logo in my research as it is one of my favorites. What i like about this logo is that it uses typography to crate both the name and graphic image for the company. This is a very good technique to use and in the case of this logo i think work's very well, if possible i think it would be good to use a similar idea in our logo even if it was just replacing one letter with a picture instead of the whole word.

Short Film Research 2

This is a short film about a man telling a story about a confusing event. The effects used are really good as when he talks about the fire he sees there is an orange glow on the right hand side of his face. Also the sound is very crisp and clear for instance you can hear him sipping out of his cup very clearly and it also links to the river he is describing. The close up shots are really good and the lighting is perfect, especially the lighting effects at the end of the film in the club.

Similar Film Comparisons

Carrie - Cinderella The film, Carrie, is about a friendless girl abused by her christian fundamentalist mother and bullied by the popular girls of her class (ugly sister/wicked stepmother reference). When she experiences her first period in the gym shower, she becomes hysterical. Due to her sheltered life, she's no knowledge of periods. Rather than help, the girls throw tampons and sanitary towels at her until the gym teacher intervenes. While she's screaming, a light-bulb breaks. Carrie realises she has telekinesis powers (magical aspect). One of the girls, Sue, takes pity on her and asks her boyfriend to take Carrie to the prom to make her feel normal (prince character). As this is happening, the gym teacher encourages her to go and tells her to make a dress and wear makeup for the first time (fairy god-mother). However when she goes to the prom with her date in her dress, she is rigged the prom queen only to have a bucket of pigs blood poured over her by one of the bullies. As she gets mad, her powers take over and destroy the school and kill everyone. When she goes home her mother tries to kill her. But Carrie kills her instead. This is a rather modern adaptation of Cinderella, but obviously with a different genre. Additionally, another inspiration to our film is the alternate ending. Instead of a happy, forgiving ending, Carrie's prom goes badly, and instead of forgiving her mother and bullies, she kills them all.

Our Final genre Idea

For our final idea, we have decided to choose the genre, Fairy Tale Adaptations, but ours will be a modern adaptation of a legendary fairy tale. Here are the classic Brothers Grimm stories we are using for inspiration: Snow White Cinderella Beauty and the Beast Rapunzel Little Red Cap Sleeping Beauty The Frog Prince Goldielocks and the Three Bears Hansel and Gretel Rumpelstilitskin The Little Mermaid Alice in Wonderland Skrek Aladdin Thumbelina All of these classic stories have many aspects in common which make them unique and enjoyable, which is why we are choosing this genre to create our own enjoyable film. Every fairy tale has: A villain A hero/heroin Royalty Poverty A helper/s An antagonist A moral Magic/Enchantments For our modern day adaptation, which we have chosen to do to attract our target audience as it will connect more with the audience (age between 15-30). We will avoid the use of magic as in the 21st century, nobody believes in magic. Additionally, we would swap the use of poverty and royalty for working class families who are either survival-realistic or materialistic, which is a more realistic aspect than kings and paupers.

Modern fairy tale film examples

Having established modern fairytales as the genre of our film i have chosen to look at films of a similar type on this post are several examples and clips of films that fit the genre. have dont this in the hope that it will help us generate a few ideas of what the plot for our film could be.

Stardust

plot: In a countryside town bordering on a magical land, a young man makes a promise to his beloved that he'll retrieve a fallen star by venturing into the magical realm.

film poster

One day a boy named Tristan Thorn makes a bet with Victoria, the girl of his dreams, that he can bring her back a falling star that lands beyond the wall. So he journeys through the gap into the wall and into the other world, determined to bring back the fallen star in seven days and win Victoria's hand in marriage. To his surprise, the star in question is not a lump of rock but a plucky celestial princess named Yvaine, who is not at all pleased to be knocked out of the sky and subsequently kidnapped. And a fallen star, it seems, is quite a commodity in Stormhold. Soon Tristan and Yvaine are running from flying pirates, warring princes, and three wicked witches who want to cut Yvaine's heart out of her chest and eat it in order to restore their eternal youth. To win the bet, Tristan will have to hold his own in a dangerous game of swords and sorcery - but this new world has more surprises in store than he could ever have imagined...

The Princess Bride

Plot: A classic fairy tale, with swordplay, giants, an evil prince, a beautiful princess, and yes, some kissing (as read by a kindly grandfather).

To cheer his grandson up, Grandpa has brought a storybook; The Princess Bride, a tale of the love between the beautiful Buttercup and the besotted Westley, a love cruelly interrupted by Westley's tragic apparent death at sea when seeking his fortune. Heartbroken, Buttercup has sworn never to love again, but accepts the marriage proposal of the rich and handsome Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne of Florin; but death is no barrier to true love, and in a story filled with exotically-accented swordsmen, big-hearted giants, genius kidnappers, sadistic torturers, vile swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, the Dread Pirate Roberts and a somewhat embittered miracle worker, the love between Westley and Buttercup twists and turns on a path filled with adventure. Will the True Love of Westley and Buttercup win the day? Will Inigo Montaya find the six-fingered man who murdered his father? Will Humperdinck's evil plans come to fruition? And, more importantly, will Grandpa be able to tell the story without any of the yucky kissing?

Tideland

But this journey offers little for Jeliza by way of consolation and as the vast loneliness of her new existence grows she falls deeper and deeper into the twisted world of fantasy that she has created in her mind.

Black Swan

Plot: A ballet dancer wins the lead in "Swan Lake" and is perfect for the role of the delicate White Swan - Princess Odette - but slowly loses her mind as she becomes more and more like Odile, the Black Swan.

film poster
homas Leroy, the artistic director of a New York City ballet company, is mounting Swan Lake as the company's next production. Many of the ballerinas in the company aspire for the lead, which would have previously gone to the company's former principle dancer Beth Macintyre before her forced retirement. No one wants the the role more than Nina Sayers, who lives to dance, so much so that she wants to be exactly like Beth in every aspect. Nina lives with her overbearing mother, Erica Sayers, a former ballerina who now lives vicariously through her daughter as she never made it as a ballerina herself. Nina is a technically proficient and hard working dancer who can easily capture the essence of the innocent white swan, but Thomas doesn't believe she has the dark passion required to portray the black swan. An unexpected move by Nina convinces Thomas that Nina may have what it takes, and he gives her the lead. Thomas will do anything to get that passion out of her. Nina feels that her new place in the company is threatened by Lily, a ballerina newly arrived into the company from San Francisco. Lily, who is looser in every aspect of her life than Nina, encompasses the essence of the black swan more so than Nina. But as Nina believes Lily is to her what she herself was to Beth, Nina, in doing whatever it takes to be perfect as both the white swan and the black swan, descends into madness.

Coraline

When the Other Mother invites Coraline to stay in her world forever, the girl refuses and finds that the alternate reality where she is trapped is only a trick to lure her
